Books by Whitman

U. S. Editions of Leaves of Grass

This page offers access to the six American editions of Leaves of Grass published in Whitman's lifetime and the so-called deathbed edition of 1891–92. Also available here are page images of Leaves of Grass Imprints and of Whitman's personal copy of the 1860 Leaves, known as the "Blue Book," with hundreds of Whitman's manuscript annotations, revisions, additions, and deletions. As time allows, we plan to present additional printings of Leaves of Grass.

Other Books

Although best known for Leaves of Grass, Whitman published many books. Eventually, this section of the Archive will include page images, transcriptions, and contextual information for all of the various prose, poetry, and mixed-genre volumes Whitman published in addition to Leaves, as well as for the collaborative works Whitman helped to produce. For now, we make available his books Drum-Taps (1865), Sequel to Drum-Taps (1865–66), Memoranda During the War (1876) and Complete Prose Works (1892). William Michael Rossetti's and Ernest Rhys's British editions of Leaves of Grass also are included here, because of Whitman's role in their creation. Whitman's novel Franklin Evans was originally published as a supplement to the New World in 1842 and is therefore available under "Periodicals." Whitman's 1852 novel Life and Adventures of Jack Engle, first published serially in the Sunday Dispatch, is currently being edited for publication on the Whitman Archive.
