This catalog was created, in part, from digital images of the original manuscripts obtained by The Walt Whitman Archive. The original papers and finding aid are held at the Library of Congress.

Scope and Content: 
The Charles N. Elliot Collection holds several Whitman items including a poetry draft, article reprints, newspaper and magazine clippings on Whitman, and correspondence about Whitman. For this catalog, only the lone object deemed a poetry manuscript has been described at the item-level.

Content: Trial lines and rough draft of the first section of the poem "Nay, Tell Me Not To-Day the Publish'd Shame," first published in the New York Daily Graphic on March 5, 1873. It was not reprinted again during Whitman's lifetime.
