Editorial note(s): This version of "Poets to Come" appears in a collection of German translations containing only the "Inscriptions" cluster. The translator, Gustav Landauer, an anarchist, was a member of the Bavarian Soviet government in Munich and was killed by the German military in 1919. His translation appeared posthumously in 1921 and is based on the final form of the poem as it appeared in Leaves of Grass. For more on Landauer's translation, see Walter Grünzweig and Vanessa Steinroetter, "'Leaving it to you to prove and define': 'Poets to Come' and Whitman's German Translators."
