Editorial note(s): This translation of "Poets to Come" appeared in 1972 in a bilingual selection of poems by Whitman. It was carried out by Roger Asselineau, France's foremost Whitman scholar. Confusingly enough, this edition specifies only the poems' first date of publication, while reproducing them in French and in English in their final version. The translation is based on the final form of the poem as it appeared in Leaves of Grass. For more on Asselineau's translation, see Eric Athenot, "Whitman futur, ou l'avenir à venir: 'Poets to Come' in French Translation."
