     5.50 P.M. W. in his room—reading the Post. Out in his chair today. "A bad day," he said, "a bad headache the day through." Looked dragged out. No carriage yesterday or today: had directed the man to come Tuesday or Wednesday.

     Times half-column yesterday (evidently from Jim Scovel)—made up bodily almost from the birthday book. W. explained: "There was ten dollars in it—that was enough: those fellows need no other inspiration."

     I got the menu from the chef at Reisser's and left manuscript for card at Billstein's. W. "curious to see how it works."

     Looked over the German Democrat one-and-a-half-column printed on his birthday (I had it with me). Questioned me with respect to its tendency: "Is it good? Is it favorable?"
