     8 P.M. On my way to the Club: University Extension debated tonight. Professor Adams from Johns Hopkins and Pepper of Philadelphia. W. spoke of the subject: "A little dubious," as he said, whether it "could be so termed as very decidedly to enrich the masses." Somehow "our democracy

needs something no college can give it." But he took "no ground against" for the "full proportions and even the kind" of scheme afoot had never been deeply thought over by him.

     Sent his "general love" to any who might ask (as some always do)— and special remembrance to Dr. Brinton."
