     Down to W.'s about 4.45. He lay on bed in his room—his eyes open—his look rather vacant: seemed a little startled by my entrance. Fan in his hand. Was passing through a bad day. I stayed but a few minutes. Was "in passage" to Logan, to take tea with the Fels'. Said his head troubled him. I had a letter from Chicago friend of Salter's enclosing check for complete Whitman like Salter's. I wrote back saying that such a book was not to be secured now, but that copies identical with it except for the cover I could readily secure for him: further, that I held his check subject to his directions. I told W. who said, "You did just right—did just what I should have done under the circumstances." Informed me that Gilchrist had just been in "for a few minutes."
